Low Body Weight!!!

A person is usually considered underweight if they are well below the weight appropriate for their height and age, as measured by charts such as the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI chart, however, is only appropriate for adults, and has limitations because it cannot distinguish between body fat and muscle, which can make very muscular people appear overweight. Equally the chart may make people who have lost muscle mass, such as the elderly, appear excessively underweight. Some individuals are also genetically disposed to be underweight.

If anyone is more than 20 per cent below the standard weight for their height, the cause may be poor diet or disease. And, if substantial weight loss occurs suddenly or progressively, it is almost certainly symptomatic of a serious disorder.

Being underweight is often congenital, but may also be due to inadequate diet and a lack of vitamins, poor intestinal absorption, pancreatic dysfunction, stress, over exercising, or a tendency to hyperthyroidism. In young girls, unexplained weight loss may mask Turner’s syndrome (a chromosomal abnormality that affects growth in approximately one in 3000 females) or possibly anorexia.
